The words “Tameka Citchen-Spruce she/her/hers United States” is to the left of a picture of Tameka, which fills the right. Tameka is a brown skin woman slightly smiling with wavy black hair wearing red lipstick, white sweater and blue jean jacket. At the bottom, “Diversability, #D30DisList.” fills the left corner.

Tameka Citchen-Spruce (She/her/hers)

Disability Advocate, Independent Film Producer, and Screenwriter

United States

Tameka is a Disability Justice Activist and Filmmaker. She has advocated for over 15 years for people with disabilities, the issues range from affordable and accessible housing, voting oppression towards people with disabilities, criminal justice reform, and racial and gender injustices. She also produced a film for multiple audiences that centers on disabled girl stories. Tameka’s work centers on the stories of BIPOC, women, and girls with disabilities. There aren't too many black women with a physical disability in leadership positions. She publicly shares that growing up there weren't any media representations of women who look like her. So Tameka seeks to tell stories of multi-marginalized communities. One of those stories is the My Girl Story documentary. My Girl Story has been seen nationally and locally and put a face to the issues of black girls with disabilities.

This past year, Tameka was selected to be Advocate of the Year award from National Association of Developmental Disabilities Councils, and she organized My Girl Story: Black Girls and Mental Health Film Screenings and Community Conversations. This was done for a National and Detroit audience.

We asked Tameka if she would like to add anything else to her accomplishments, she stated: “One thing that maybe missing or I want to highlight is the documentary I produced, My Girl Story. My work consists of telling stories and advocating for the rights of BIPOC people with disabilities, women and girls. My Girl Story has sparked conversations around black girls and black girls with various disabilities My hope is to uplift black girls voices and give insight on how to support them.
