Brittanie Richardson (she/her/hers)

Abolitionist and Artist

Kenya

Brittanie is the founder of Art & Abolition, a nonprofit that “supports a community of young women leaders in Kenya who are exposing and shifting ‘anti-black girl’ culture while healing from the impact of sexual violence.” She is a survivor herself and also has schizoaffective disorder. Her disability has threatened her life on several occasions, yet she has remained courageously committed to the girls in her care and is interrupting generational poverty and abuse in their lives.

This year, Brittanie has continued to provide safe housing, education, and art therapy to the girls in her care, as well as economic empowerment opportunities for their biological families. She was also awarded the prestigious Dalai Lama Fellowship for emerging social justice leaders who are committed to universal human values. She has completely shifted Art & Abolition’s messaging to an empowering model that centers the strengths and unique gifts of each girl, emphasizing solidarity over charity.

We asked Brittanie if she would like to add anything else to her accomplishments, and she stated: “I am in the process of writing my memoir with the working title “Our Liberation Song”.”
