Event Recap: Down Syndrome Trailblazers

By Katherine Lewis, Content Manager at Diversability

This month's panel discussion "Diversability Unplugged: Down Syndrome Trailblazers" spotlighted the lives and tremendous accomplishments of four people redefining their industries. Their titles range from entrepreneur, model, politician, advocate, and so much more. Our panelists included John and Mark Cronin (he/him) from John’s Crazy Socks; Katie Driscoll (she/her), founder of Changing the Face of Beauty; Bryan Russell (he/him), public figure and focus of the documentary “Candidato 34”; and Rosanne Stuart (she/her) Manager of Madeline Stuart, the first professional model with Down Syndrome.

Diversability’s Content Manager Marie Deganais-Lewis kicked off the evening by welcoming attendees and sharing more about Diversability’s work. She, as well as the panelists then briefly introduced themselves before diving into the evening’s topics.

Discussion Overview

Panelists first explained to attendees what their “aha” moment was - what made them decide to take action and start their business, run for office, begin a movement for change, etc.). Each had their own reason. But one theme was consistent: paving the way for inclusion everywhere.

Our guests then provided helpful insights into their personal experiences with stigma, highlights of their journeys, and the impact they hope their work can inspire in the world.

The evening ended with each panelist sharing how we as individuals and a community can support their work and help them elevate disability pride.
