Lydia Gratis Mendes is an Afro-Irish cultural strategist, educator, and founder of a global Deaf-led social impact organization working to build belonging, representation, and connection within Deaf communities. Drawing on her lived experience as a Black Deaf, queer, and neurodivergent woman, Lydia works at the intersection of culture, race, disability, identity, and social change. Her work centers racialized and marginalized Deaf people who are often overlooked in predominantly white Deaf spaces. Over the past six years, she has created spaces where Deaf people from diverse backgrounds can find belonging, representation, and community. Through workshops, advocacy, and partnerships spanning 16 countries, Lydia has strengthened international networks and fostered dialogue around race, culture, language, and power within Deaf communities. Her work amplifies voices that have historically been excluded while helping build a more connected and inclusive global Deaf movement. Lydia was named Black and Irish Educator of the Year in 2024. Through cultural strategy, education, and community-building, she continues to create spaces where Deaf people can see themselves reflected, valued, and empowered.
