Voyagers and Youth of Tomorrow Tandem Bike Ride!

Get ready for summer with a fun-filled tandem bike ride in Mountain View! We will embark on a group tandem bike ride, walk/run around the lake, and end the afternoon with a tasty, healthy picnic. We are excited to partner with Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP), experts in adaptive sports and recreation. 

Tandem cycling is a fun and easy to learn activity that enables the thrill of traveling at fast speeds and teaches balance and coordination. Youth will gain confidence through outdoor exploration and athletic activities. In addition to tandem cycling, we will have a nature walk for those who enjoy more grounded exercise. We are excited to meet, mingle and get to know each other while having fun in the community at the same time! 

Who: Youth with vision loss ages 12-24 and their families

When: June 10th from 10:30AM – 1:00PM at Shoreline Dog Park, Mountain View

A Day in the Life: Accessible Media and Braille Specialist and Accessible Laboratory

Summer time is approaching and that means travel and summer job season is in full swing!

Let’s learn about the different transit options the Bay Area has to offer from Frank Welte. He will also discuss his career path and what led him to this hand-on career at Lighthouse for the Blind in San Francisco.

This month’s A Day in the Life, Frank will inform young adults about the free tactile map program at Lighthouse for the Blind in San Francisco. He will also discuss the in’s and outs of what skills and training are needed to become a Senior Accessible Media and Braille Specialist Media and Accessible Design Laboratory.

Frank is also a seasoned volunteer and supporter of events in the community! Come join us for a lively discussion about the importance of transportation, tactile maps and the joy of independence that it brings to everyone’s life. If you’re interested in technology and tactile maps, you won’t want to miss this workshop!

2022 Northern Regional Braille Challenge

Students, it is time to show off your braille skills! Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired is excited to host the 2022 Northern California Regional Braille Challenge! 

Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind, allowing students with vision loss to show off their fabulous braille reading, writing, and editing skills! Braille Challenge motivates students to hone their literacy skills through friendly competition and games, generates a foundation for academic and employment success, and curates friendship and camaraderie within the Northern California community.

Any student grades 1 – 12 who has vision loss and can read and write braille is eligible to participate in the Braille Challenge. Contestants are divided into five categories and tested on fundamental braille skills such as reading comprehension, spelling, speed and accuracy, proofreading, and charts and graphs. There are 5 age groups including Apprentice 1 – 2 grades, Freshman 3 – 4 grades, Sophomore 5 – 6 grades, Junior Varsity 7 -9 grades, and Varsity 10 – 12 grades.

Partnering with California School for the Blind and San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind, the 2022 Northern California Regional Braille Challenge will be a chance to reunite and celebrate your braille accomplishments! Parent and student workshops will include student panels, adult mentors, guest speakers and a chance to come together as a community. Don’t miss this fun-filled day with workshops, guest speakers, competition, and awards!

Voyagers Holiday Gathering

Tis the season to celebrate friendship and gather together! Voyagers and their families are invited to join in seasonal festivities at Vista Center, San Jose. The evening will include fun and accessible holiday games and creation, all activities will include valuable life learning lessons from the Expanded Core Curriculum.

A Day in the Life with Brain Young, biotech Medical Research Assistant

We’ve missed all of your smiling faces and are very excited to welcome you back in person with A Day in the Life with Brian Young! Brian is a Medical Research Assistant at a local Biotech company, Ontera. Ontera is convinced that better information is needed to enhance human and environmental health in a sustainable way. They have embarked on a journey to revolutionize diagnostics.


Youth of Tomorrow will go behind the scenes to understand the daily workings of a job in the field of life sciences. Youth will explore various lab and technician tools, hear Brian’s career path, and learn about the variety of careers available in this booming industry. A casual lunch will be provided prior to the Ontera tour to give the youth a chance to socialize with each other and Ontera employees.


Round trip transportation to Santa Cruz is available from Vista Center, San Jose. Please keep in mind CDC recommendations and coronavirus precautions will be followed. This event is limited to 12 students.


When: July 10 at 11:30 am. We should be back in San Jose by about 3pm.
