Marginalized groups spend most of their time negotiating with someone who has more power, socially, economically, and politically, then them. As a women of color this has also been my reality. In this workshop/talk I share my best methods for leaving the power (in-)balance out of the negotiation equation.
Takeaways include: How to shift negotiations from competition to collaboration; How to take on the role of facilitator to gain more control of the process; How to ask questions and say no without seeming antagonistic; How to use the negotiation as a tool for leveling the playing field going forward. I usually prefer to have a shorter presentation, an interactive exercise, and finally a longer Q&A session so that everyone can learn in a way that suits them best.
About Janet: Janet advises founders and business development teams on how to negotiate mutually beneficial collaborations, partnerships and other deals that expand their businesses. Her negotiation acuity is the combined result of 15+ years experience as a startup legal advisor, legal marketing strategist, human rights lawyer, civil and family law litigator, nonprofit executive, grant writer, speaker, and workshop facilitator. Janet is now an award winning collaborative negotiator known for helping her clients uncover the true potential of their bottom line.
Janet is the CEO of On Your Terms which was purposely founded to disrupt the traditional negotiation methods that systemically favor people in power. Janet’s methods give those without natural or traditional leverage a way to negotiate on their terms, without having to participate in power games, give into role play dominance, or fall into the trap of mediation. Her negotiation philosophy is based on seeing relationships as the true bottom line.
